Hidden away in rural Pennsylvania lies a haven of luxury and leisure – Nemacolin Resort. I recently had the pleasure of staying here and was so surprised by the diversity of accommodation options, plethora of activities for all ages, and, most notably, the exceptional service.
Arrival and Accommodation Options:
Upon arriving at Nemacolin, I was immediately struck by the picturesque landscape and friendly staff. My butler, who had been there over 20 years, could not have been more pleasant and really made my arrival so special. I stayed in the Chateau, the French-inspired main hotel of the resort, which was beautiful and centrally located. Pro tip: I highly recommend booking the 5th floor concierge level where you have a special lounge and elevated butler service!
Beyond the Chateau, there is also the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired boutique hotel, Falling Rock, private estates and condos great for families, and a new Grand Lodge set to open later this year. Activities for Everyone:
The activities list is where Nemacolin really shines. There is SO much to do to keep you busy for a week or more. A few of the activities we did while there were cosmic bowling, ax throwing, horseback riding, and golfing. There are also art and cooking classes, ziplining, tubing, fly fishing, and the list goes on and on. I had my first clay shooting experience at the Field Club, which was a blast (literally!). Randy, my instructor, was one of the most passionate and patient guides I have ever had.
Pampering at the Spa:
The Woodlands Spa is a must for anyone wanting a truly relaxing retreat. With an expansive space of course with pools, sauna, steam rooms and more, it was worth going an hour before my massage to experience the amenities. After my massage I had a 30-minute Fireside Lounge reservation (which I highly recommend!) where you can sip a glass of bubbly or tea to really savor that relaxing post-treatment spa time!
Dining Delights:
Nemacolin offers plenty of great dining options as well – from a AAA Five-Diamond restaurant to casual fare. For exceptional fine dining, Lautrec is a must. For elevated, yet laid-back Italian, Barattolo is delicious. On a hot day you definitely want to make a stop at PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor.
Heaven for Art Enthusiasts:
One of the most incredible amenities is the art collection, which is extensive at over 1,000 pieces owned by the founding Hardy family. You might be strolling through the gardens and stumble across a piece of the Berlin Wall, or be sitting in the lobby and put your coffee down on the table where there also sits a Tiffany lamp. The art is not behind glass but all around you, meant to be enjoyed and experienced during your stay. I recommend either doing an art tour or unique experience with the local artist in residence.
Final Notes:
The welcoming staff at Nemacolin really make the property special. It is the perfect destination if you want to stay close to home, enjoy a luxurious yet active retreat, and make sure there is something to do for everyone. I was there solo this year, but cannot wait to return and bring my family to really experience all Nemacolin has to offer!
